Depositing money on a trading platform is a 6-step process: select Deposit or Add funds, choose a payment method, enter the amount and confirm the transfer. Most platforms support a linked bank account, debit card, bank wire or electronic transfer. The available options, fees and processing times depend on the broker and your country.

Deposit Money in Six Steps
- Log in to your trading account.
- Open Wallet, Cash, Transfers, Payments or Fund account.
- Select Deposit or Add funds.
- Choose a payment method, such as a bank transfer, debit card or wire transfer.
- Enter the deposit amount and currency.
- Review the details and confirm the payment.
The menu names vary between platforms. Robinhood uses Account → Menu → Transfers → Deposit, while Trading 212 instructs users to open the menu, select Deposit funds, choose a payment method and enter the amount.
Which Deposit Method Should You Use?
A linked bank account is usually the best option for regular investing. A debit card may be faster for smaller deposits, while a bank wire is more suitable for larger amounts when the broker supports it.
| Deposit method | Best for | Typical availability | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linked bank account or ACH | Regular deposits and lower-cost funding | Often one to five business days | The bank account may need verification |
| Debit card | Smaller deposits that need to arrive quickly | Often minutes, where supported | Limits, card verification and possible fees may apply |
| Bank wire | Larger deposits | Same day to several business days | You must use the broker's exact wire instructions |
| Broker-to-broker transfer | Moving existing investments | Several business days or longer | This transfers securities rather than ordinary cash |
Processing times and limits are account-specific. Robinhood, for example, lists different limits and estimated processing times for ACH, debit card, real-time payments and wires.
How to Deposit by Bank Transfer
A bank transfer requires action in both your trading account and your bank account:
- Select Bank transfer, ACH or Wire transfer in the trading account.
- Copy the broker's receiving details, including the account number, routing number, SWIFT/BIC code or payment reference.
- Start the transfer through your bank's website or mobile app.
- Include your trading account name and reference number exactly as instructed.
- Check the deposit status in the trading platform.
Some brokers use the deposit screen only to record your intended payment. Interactive Brokers states that a wire deposit notification does not move the money automatically. You must still instruct your bank to send the wire.
Do not send a wire using old or copied banking details. Open the broker's current deposit instructions inside your verified account before starting the payment. Incorrect routing details can delay, reject or convert the deposit.
How to Deposit by Debit Card
If your broker accepts debit cards:
- Open Deposit funds or Add money.
- Select Debit card.
- Enter the card number, expiry date and security code.
- Enter the deposit amount.
- Complete any bank authentication, such as a one-time passcode.
- Confirm the deposit.
Card deposits can be quick, but the platform may impose daily or transaction limits. Your bank may also decline the payment if it considers the transaction unusual. Trading 212, for example, allows users to add a card through Deposit funds → Payment method → Card.
When Will Deposited Money Be Available for Trading?
The time depends on the payment method and the broker's hold rules.
- Instant deposits: Some brokers allow you to trade with part of a pending deposit.
- Standard bank transfers: These can take several business days.
- Wire transfers: These may arrive the same day or take longer, depending on the sending bank and currency.
- Card deposits: These are often quicker where supported.
Robinhood states that standard bank deposits can take up to five business days, although eligible customers may receive instant trading access to part of a pending deposit. Interactive Brokers also separates the date funds arrive from the date they become available for trading or withdrawal.
Available to trade does not always mean available to withdraw. A broker may apply a settlement or withdrawal hold, especially to recently deposited funds.
Can You Deposit Money Directly Into MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5?
Usually, no. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are trading interfaces. The broker manages account funding through its own website or app. IG, for example, states that users must deposit through the main IG account management area rather than directly inside MT5.
To fund a MetaTrader account:
- Log in to your broker's website or app.
- Select My accounts, Funds or Add funds.
- Choose the specific MT4 or MT5 account.
- Make the deposit through the broker's payment system.
- Wait for the balance to appear in MetaTrader.
What to Check Before Confirming a Deposit
Before submitting the payment, verify:
- The trading account is fully opened and identity checks are complete.
- The deposit currency matches the account currency where possible.
- The bank account or card is in your own name.
- The account number and payment reference are correct.
- The minimum deposit and maximum transfer limits are suitable.
- Any currency conversion, card or bank fees are acceptable.
- The broker is authorised in your jurisdiction.
Using another person's bank account can cause delays or rejection. Interactive Brokers says it generally discourages and rejects third-party deposits because of fraud and money-laundering risks.
If you are sending a large transfer, consider starting with a small test amount first. Use the deposit instructions shown inside the broker's platform rather than details from an old email or saved document.
What to Do If the Deposit Is Missing
Check the following in order:
- Review the deposit status in the trading platform.
- Confirm that the payment left your bank account.
- Check whether the broker requested additional verification.
- Confirm that the account number and payment reference were correct.
- Contact the broker through its official support channel.
- Do not send a second payment until you understand what happened to the first transfer.
If you are using a bank wire, keep the transfer receipt and confirmation number. These details can help the broker trace the payment.
